Despite slower growth than in previous years, all indications suggest that 2025 will once again be a record year for national tourism. Accordingly:

By October 2025, the total number of overnight stays in Portugal reached 72.8 million, compared to 71.2 million in the same period of 2024, representing growth of 2.2%.

Total accommodation revenues associated with these overnight stays amounted to €6.4 billion in the first ten months of 2025, compared to €6.0 billion in 2024, reflecting an increase of 6.7%.

These figures clearly demonstrate the ability to attract demand and the increasing value of Portugal’s tourism offering, as well as the sector’s contribution to GDP.

By October, international markets accounted for 70% of overnight stays in Portugal, highlighting the strong dynamism of international demand. The top five source markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Spain and France.

Therefore, 2025 must be considered a positive year for the national hotel industry, with revenues growing above inflation. Operating margins, however, may not have increased at the same pace, given the significant rise in operating costs, particularly in staffing and food & beverage. As such, the challenges for 2026 remain similar to those of previous years: (1) attracting and retaining human resources and (2) closely monitoring and controlling operating costs.

Interest from international investors and hotel operators in Portugal remains strong, particularly in the development of serviced apartments and branded residences. Nevertheless, rising land and property values, as well as higher construction costs, continue to influence investment decisions.

Finally, mention should be made of the presentation of the Tourism Strategy 2035, which will guide the national tourism strategy over the next decade. Consequently, 2026 should be approached with optimism, although it is reasonable to assume that growth levels may not match those of recent years.
